Is a kid officially a toddler when they start to walk? If yes - then I'm the parent of a toddler.
She's been standing on her own for a while now, and has taken a step here or there. However, within the last two weeks or so, she's really taken to her feet. She still crawls when she wants to get someplace quickly, but she can make it across a room now without hanging on to anything.
Of course, I immediately ordered some safety gates, mainly to block off the stairs, which she climbs with great ease. My house now resembles a giant maze.

We tried the baby gates when my sister was little, she just climbed over them. She climbed over the one at the top of the stairs one morning and crashed all the way down thru the gate at the bottom of the stairs. *grin*

With walking comes more independance, and they start to think they know everything ( Oh wait, maybe that's teenagers, whatever same thing) :D

you'll be amazed at how easily you can jump those gates. I would break my neck today, but back in the day, I could swing a leg over one while holding an infant and a toddler and dodging the dog and stray Legos.
She's pretty young to walk, isn't she? Cross your fingers and hope she isn't also a climber. Climbers are the worse.
One of my brother's kids used to pull open the oven door, climb onto the kitchen counter and then climb up and perch on top of the refrigerator - all before he was two. It was pretty funny. He grew up to be a pilot.
